This
geologically significant mountain range and dense forest stretching
across most of the western of Cyprus reaches up to 1.952 meters at
Mount Olympus its highest peak. Known as much for its charming
mountain villages perched between terraced hill slopes as its
churches and monasteries, the area attracts sports enthusiasts and
nature loves the year round. No less than nine Byzantine churches in
the Troodos mountains are included in the UNESCO list of World
Heritage due to their amazing architecture, icons and frescoes. Well
planned scenic nature walks and cycling permit exploration of the
rare flora, geology, ecology and landscape. The higher slopes are by
skiers in the winter months.
Platres
and Kakopetria are pretty mountain resorts. Phini village is known
for it's red clay pottery and the 15th century, reputedly haunted,
monastery of Ayii Anargyri. Omodos village is remembered for its
vineyards, lace and the Monastery of Stavros. The largest and most
famous of the monastery's is Kykko. 20 Km from Platres you can find
the monastery Trooditissa.
